Example UI Spec: Logging In
By Ellen Isaacs
This page last updated: June 13, 2000

Figure D34. Login screen

When the user starts Hubbub for the first time on this device, it prompts them to log in, using their email address and their password, as shown in Figure D34. Again, if this is the first time they've logged in from this device, they are asked to give a label to the computer, shown in Figure D35. (If they have logged on before, the main window appears.)

Figure D35. Device selection screen

The user can choose from one of the options listed in the pulldown menu, which consists of the following:

  • Work (Work)
  • Home (Home)
  • School (Scl)
  • Laptop (Lptp)
  • New...

If none of the provided choices are appropriate, the user can create another by choosing the New item. Doing so brings up the window in Figure D36.

Figure D36. New Device Label window

The user types a label for the PC and for the Palm. The fields are set up so that they cannot type a label longer than 4 characters. (The field stops accepting characters and beeps each time they try to type a character beyond the limit.) Once they add a new device label, they click Add, the window goes away and the pulldown menu in the Choose Location window is set to the new label. The user accepts the choice by clicking the OK button, and the window disappears. If the user has logged on before from another client, then the main Hubbub window appears, described below. If they have never logged on before, then they go through a series of screens helping them select a Sound ID, described in the SIDs section.

Once the user has provided the necessary info for this particular login, the main window appears and the "Connecting" footer appears, as described in the awareness section. After the user has logged on and given their password, they do not need to log in again, even across sessions. The only time they need to log in again is if they explicitly logged out. They log out by choosing the "Log out" menu item from the File menu of the main window, shown in Figure D37. When they choose that, their Hubbub disconnects from the server, and (therefore) the Bub list disappears and all menu items become inactive except "Exit" and "Log out," which becomes "Log in." When the user chooses Log in, the login window appears again.
